Here are a couple of articles, from our papers:

On anniversary of Katrina, residents mourn, celebrate life

Special/Hurricane Katrina

I don’t really know what to say myself, I feel like I should be down there too, but here I am in Toronto…

Loss of water and tropical storm. Sunday, Jun 11 2006

Yesterday we lost our water for two or three hours. It sucked. Andy thought that they were going to have to tear up the street to find the leak and fix it but luckily we magically got our water back. Before it came back on I was afraid we'd be without water for days. I really take water for granted. I mean, without water we wouldn't be able to shower, drink, flush toilets, do dishes, wash our hands… Yikes. Anyways, here is an article about our loss of water.

In other news, we may be getting our first tropical storm in the next couple of days. I think right now it's aiming at Florida but they're still keeping an eye on it. I really hope it doesn't turn into a tropical storm for us because, from what I understand, people living in FEMA trailers have to evacuate even if it's just a tropical storm. For us, we have to evacuate if there's a category two hurricane.

Hurricane season: now. Thursday, Jun 1 2006

Hurricane season officially started today. Wish me luck!

How Common Ground is preparing for hurricane season. Monday, May 1 2006

Taken from Common Ground's FAQs:

"The Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness has communicated to Common Ground organizers that they expect 5-7 city-wide mandatory evacuations this year. Common Ground stands in solidarity with survivors and therefore our resources will be directed toward creating a resident emergency preparedness and evacuation plan. As a volunteer, we ask that you act in solidarity with this effort and come prepared to evacuate yourself."

Hurricane season begins June 1st. I'm hoping that the city won't need to be evacuated. My options are to either tough it out (which seems dangerous) or to find someone to get a drive to somewhere safe with. That or I'll be evacuated with the locals. I'm not quite sure what is going to happen, it's all up in the air, considering I'm still at home. I think it's too bad that Common Ground doesn't have the resources yet to have a plan for its volunteers.
